 2022 Preview

Gulf Shores completed the 2021 season with a 6-4 record. Last year Gulf Shores just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region one with a 3-4 region record.

The Dolphins improved in 2021 with their first winning season since 2013. The Dolphins won as many games as in any season since 2013.

Since 2010, Gulf Shores has gone a combined 39-82. Their 32.2% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 5A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 22 seasons, Gulf Shores has not won much with a record of 75-147. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 5A and 331st in the AHSAA.

The Dolphins are led by head coach Mark Hudspeth who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-4 record in his first season at Gulf Shores. The Dolphins saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Hudspeth arrived. The Dolphins have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hudspeth.

Coach Hudspeth's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 6-4 (60.0%).

Brendon Byrd transferred from Spanish Fort during the offseason and will lead the improved Dolphins this season. With the return of star running back Ronnie Royal III Gulf Shores should be a force to deal with on offense in 2022.

The Gulf Shores Dolphins will play in Class 5A region one during the 2022 season. The Dolphins may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region one this year.

The Dolphins will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. Gulf Shores has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2013 but hope to return to the post season this year.

The Dolphins open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent St. Michael on Thursday, August 18 at Volanta Park. Last year the St. Michael Cardinals finished with an overall record of 6-3 and in fifth place in Class 4A region one. The Cardinals ended last season on a positive note with a win over Millry by a score of 48-6 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Gulf Shores and St. Michael have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Dolphins have a 2-0-0 record against the Cardinals. They last met in with

Gulf Shores returns 6A All-State Junior athlete Ronnie Royal. He was named to the first team last season.
